Finding the right special-education program for your child is all about the fit. While there’s many ways to teach children in autism spectrum schools, selecting the right methods and professionals for your child’s needs can help them thrive.
Research shows that if we give the best available special education to children with severe disabilities, those children are more likely to grow up to be productive, independent and able to contribute to society as tax-paying citizens.
And it takes a team of professionals to do so. Finding the right support team can make an incredible difference in your child’s life.
Autism Spectrum Schools Support Team
Harbor School seeks to empower every student with skills for life, work, and recreation. We believe that every individual, whether a child with autism or a child with a disability, possesses the dignity and potential to contribute to a better world. To accommodate different needs and learning styles, we offer a flexible curriculum in the classroom.
Some of the support service professionals involved in developing the autism spectrum school education program at Harbor School include:
Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
Speech-language pathologists help to diagnose and treat communication problems and disorders. They provide each student with a unique way to function and communicate socially with others throughout the school day.
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapist
ABA therapists use behavior modification tools, such as reinforcement strategies, to support students in their efforts to build communication skills, play successfully with others and increase motor development.
Occupational Therapist (OT)
OTs evaluate a student’s functioning in daily activities and help customize interventions to improve social and academic functioning. OTs can also help children with autism manage and learn how to integrate their sensory systems into school work, play, responsibilities when at home, and other areas outside of school.
Registered Nurse (RN)
Certified school nurses and RNs work together to establish an environment that addresses the unique medical needs of all students. Working closely with teachers, therapists and families, RNs goal is to promote the health and well-being within autism spectrum schools.Physical Therapist (PT)
A PT is a licensed medical professional who works with students to improve gross motor skills, physical strength and mobility. In autism spectrum schools, pediatric PTs work with students of varying needs, including those with disabilities or autism, to improve coordination, balance and muscle tone.
Board Certified Music Therapist
Music Therapy has been proven to be effective for children with special needs to develop socially and emotionally, improve communication skills, develop fine and gross motor skills and increase attention span. A Board Certified Music Therapist has extensive experience working with students of all disorders and disabilities.
Board Certified Behavior Analysts
Board Certified Behavior Analysts work with Child Psychiatrists to address the mental and psychiatric needs of developmentally disabled students. They collaborate efforts with the classroom teachers to minimize behaviors in the academic and school settings.
Finding Autism Spectrum Schools In Your Area
Always request a class visit to make sure the autism spectrum schools you’re researching can deliver the specific special-education and specialized support your child needs. This is a great time to interview teachers and administrators at these schools to learn more about their approach to teaching and caring for students.
