Special Education Programs at Harbor School

Certified teachers assisted by trained paraprofessionals provide individualized and small group instruction in a small class setting. A multi-sensory approach is used with individualized and modified techniques. A wide variety of materials and devices are used to help our students reach his or her full academic and life skill potential.

At Harbor School we are proud to have a curriculum filled with programs uniquely catered so our students can succeed at school and most importantly, get them ready for the outside world.

Academic Programs

Our academic program infuses functional living skills within a curriculum aligned to New Jersey State Learning Standards (NJSLS). Our academic program covers multiple subjects such as math, language arts, social studies and science, literacy/reading, handwriting, computers and health.

Life Skill Programs

At Harbor School we offer a wide range of programs for everyday living including but not limited to: cooking, activities of daily life and pre-vocational skills, in addition to functional reading and math.

Technology Programs

Harbor School utilizes a variety of technology used in different styles as a teaching tool through white boards with Mimio Systems, iPads, augmentative technologies. In addition, Harbor School's STEM program promotes cognitive development,  communication, independence, and critical thinking while supporting IEP goals. Collaboration with therapists and paraprofessionals ensures the learning environment is inclusive, safe, and responsive to each student’s unique needs.

Support Services Programs

Harbor School features occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, art, music, dance, counseling, nursing and job sampling/transition. In addition we offer supportive behavior, social skills and crisis intervention programs for our special education students.

Transistion Programs

Our transition program provides the student with the experience of working at a job within the school setting. Each student is provided with on-the-job training. The student’s time at work is recorded and his or her job performance is evaluated. This work experience helps the students to develop the work and social skills that are necessary prior to their placement at a job site in the local community.
